What happens when eSIM data runs out?
When eSIM data is used up, data stops on that eSIM. Top up from your eSIM page on plans that allow it. The same eSIM gets the data, nothing new to install.
Do this now
- Open your eSIM page from the eSIMology email, or from your account.
- Check the usage meter to see what's left and the expiry date.
- Top up from your eSIM page, if your plan allows it.
- Wait a minute, then check your phone is back online.
- Keep Allow Mobile Data Switching off on iPhone, in Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data.
- If you can't top up, buy a new eSIM and install it over Wi-Fi.
What happens when your eSIM data runs out?
When the data is used up, data stops on that eSIM. The eSIM stays on your phone, so you can fix it in a minute. On daily-allowance plans, the speed drops until the next day's allowance instead. When the plan's days run out, the plan ends, even with data left. Your eSIM page shows the expiry date and status. If data runs down faster than you expect, read why data runs out fast.
How do I get data back?
Top up from your eSIM page, on plans that allow it. The data is added to the same eSIM, so there's nothing new to install, and you're back online in a minute.
Open your eSIM page from the eSIMology email, or from your account if you're signed in. Check the usage meter first, then follow how to top up an eSIM.
No top-up option on your plan? Buy a new eSIM and install it over Wi-Fi, at a hotel or café, because installing needs internet. Installing at home doesn't start the clock on most plans.
Does my phone borrow home data?
Keep Allow Mobile Data Switching off on iPhone. Then your phone won't borrow home data and roaming charges when the travel data stops. Most of the time, that's one switch.
- iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data, then check Allow Mobile Data Switching is off.
Still offline after a top-up?
The travel eSIM needs Data Roaming on, and your home line needs it off. Check it here:
- iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → tap a line → Data Roaming
- Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming
- Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → tap a SIM → Roaming

Can I add more data to my eSIM after it runs out?
Yes, on plans that allow it. Top up from your eSIM page, and the data is added to the same eSIM, so there's nothing new to install.
Is there a way to avoid roaming charges on iPhone?
Yes. Keep Allow Mobile Data Switching off, in Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data. Then your phone won't borrow home data when the travel data stops.
How do I see how much data I have left?
Open your eSIM page. The usage meter shows your data left, plus the expiry date and status.
