Does Wi-Fi calling work abroad? Check first

Wi-Fi calling works abroad only if your home network supports it from that country. Check with them first. Then turn it on under Settings → Mobile Service → your home line → Wi-Fi Calling.

Do this now

  1. Check your home network supports Wi-Fi calling in the country you're visiting.
  2. Ask your home network whether calls from that country cost the same as at home.
  3. Turn on Wi-Fi calling for your home line before you fly.
  4. Turn on Data Roaming for the travel eSIM, and off for your home line.
  5. Use Wi-Fi calling on hotel or café Wi-Fi to call your home number.
  6. Call and message over data with WhatsApp or FaceTime when you're out and about.

Does Wi-Fi calling work abroad?

Yes, if your home network supports Wi-Fi calling from the country you're visiting. Check that first.

Wi-Fi calling lets your home line make and take normal calls and texts over Wi-Fi, instead of a mobile network. Whether those calls cost the same as at home is your home network's rule, so check with them before you rely on it.

How do I turn on Wi-Fi calling before I travel?

Turn it on at home, before you fly. Most of the time it's one switch.

  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → tap your home line → Wi-Fi Calling
  • Samsung: Phone app → More options (⋮) → Settings → Wi-Fi calling
  • Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → home SIM → Wi-Fi calling

When should I call over data instead?

Wi-Fi calling runs over Wi-Fi, such as at a hotel or café. When you're out and about, use data instead. WhatsApp, FaceTime and other apps work on the data on your eSIMology travel eSIM, with no call charges from your home network. Read our calls and texts guide.

Do I keep my home SIM in the phone?

Yes. Keep your home SIM in the phone, so texts to your number still arrive. Your travel eSIM is data only, with no phone number. For more, see how to keep WhatsApp and your home number.

Why isn't Wi-Fi calling working abroad?

Check that your phone is on a working Wi-Fi network, and that your home network supports Wi-Fi calling in that country. Then restart your phone and try again.

Data Roaming must be ON for the travel eSIM and OFF for your home line:

  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → tap a line → Data Roaming
  • Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming
  • Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → tap a SIM → Roaming

What to do next

Turn on Wi-Fi calling at home, then install your travel eSIM. If something still isn't right, Contact us with your order number and phone model.

Will my home network charge me for Wi-Fi calls abroad?

Your home network sets that rule. Ask them before you travel whether calls from that country cost the same as at home.

Can I make calls abroad without Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi calling needs Wi-Fi. On the move, call over data instead, with WhatsApp or FaceTime on your travel eSIM, with no call charges from your home network.

Does Wi-Fi calling use my travel eSIM's data?

No. Wi-Fi calling uses Wi-Fi, not your travel eSIM. Apps like WhatsApp and FaceTime use the travel eSIM's data for calls instead.
