Good to know

  • Data only: your own number keeps working for calls and texts
  • Hotspot works where your phone and the network allow it
  • Plans start when you first connect; install within 180 days
  • Your data routes through Poland, so some sites may show that country
  • Top up the same eSIM any time, no new QR code

Will my eSIM have signal in the Maldives?

Your eSIM joins Dhiraagu, a 4G network, so there's no 5G on this one. Your phone picks Dhiraagu by itself. WhatsApp and Viber both run happily over your mobile data, so messages are easy to send. Signal is generally fine in Malé and on resort and inhabited islands, but it can drop out at sea between them, so download your offline maps before a boat ride.

Your data reaches the internet through Poland, which is a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Our IP address help page explains what that means for you. On daily plans, speeds drop to 256 Kbps once that day's allowance is used up.

  2. Switch on when you land

Using your phone in the Maldives: data tips

  • Arriving: Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. Then touch down at Velana International (MLE), switch it on, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.
  • Your network: Dhiraagu runs on 4G, so 5G isn't part of the picture here. Every plan can be topped up, so you can add data mid-trip if your plans change.
  • Staying in touch: From Malé to Addu City, Viber and WhatsApp are the apps to have ready. Your home number stays on for calls and texts, and you can keep WhatsApp on your home number.
  • Data use: Light use, like maps, messages and email, is about 0.25 GB a day. Heavy use with streaming or a hotspot is about 1.8 GB a day, or about 25.2 GB over two weeks. After your daily allowance, speed drops to 256 Kbps.

How much is an eSIM for the Maldives?

Maldives eSIMs start at £13.99 for 1 GB a day over 1 day. A 5 GB plan for 30 days costs £72.99. Prices include any taxes and show in pounds, euros or dollars.

Which networks does the Maldives eSIM use?

Your eSIM connects to Dhiraagu in the Maldives. Your phone picks the strongest signal automatically.

When does my Maldives eSIM start?

Most plans start the moment your eSIM first connects to a network in the Maldives, so you can buy and install it at home before you fly. Install it within 180 days of buying.

Can I top up my Maldives eSIM?

Yes. Most Maldives plans can be topped up from your eSIM page in two taps, with no new QR code. The plan table on this page shows which ones.

Why does my IP address show another country?

Maldives plans route your data through Poland, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Websites and apps may show that country's content; your speed and coverage in the Maldives are not affected.

Does it come with a phone number?

Every eSIMology plan is data only. Keep your own SIM switched on for calls and texts, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or any calling app over your eSIM's data.

What if my plans change?

Cancel an eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund to your card, in two taps from your eSIM page.

Does WhatsApp work with an eSIM in the Maldives?

Yes, WhatsApp and Viber both run over your eSIM data, so you can message home from Malé or Maafushi. If you want to keep your home number on WhatsApp too, the guide to [keeping WhatsApp and your home number](/help/keep-whatsapp-and-home-number) walks you through it.

Is there 5G in the Maldives?

No, the Maldives runs on 4G rather than 5G. That's enough for maps, messages and email, and your phone's status bar will show 4G once you're connected.

Why has my data slowed down in the Maldives?

On a daily plan, your data drops to 256 Kbps once you've used that day's allowance, which is 1 GB or 3 GB a day depending on the plan. That's enough for messages, though maps and web pages will load slowly.

Can I use my eSIM as a hotspot in the Maldives?

Yes, you can share your eSIM as a hotspot, but it counts as heavy use, at about 1.8 GB a day. Plan for it if you'll be sharing with a laptop or a friend.

Can I switch on my eSIM when I land at Velana International (MLE)?

Yes, if you install your eSIM before you fly, you can switch it on as you land at Velana International (MLE). Follow the steps for [installing before you travel](/help/install-esim-before-you-travel) to get it ready at home.
