Which Germany eSIM plan do I need?

Germany is big, so choose your plan by how many days you have and how much you'll use it.

  • A long weekend in Berlin: 500 MB a day for 3 days covers messages, maps and a few rides with Uber, Bolt or FREE NOW.
  • A fortnight touring Germany: 10 GB for 30 days gives you room for maps, photos and social media from Hamburg to Munich.
  • A week of heavy work use: 2 GB a day for 7 days is ready for streaming and hotspot when your laptop needs a connection.
  • A week in Germany and a neighbour: choose 5 GB for 30 days on a Europe bundle for 31 countries, which covers both places.

Most plans can be topped up, so you can add data if your trip runs long.

Good to know

  • Data only: your own number keeps working for calls and texts
  • Hotspot works where your phone and the network allow it
  • Plans start when you first connect; install within 180 days
  • Your data routes through France or Netherlands or United Kingdom, so some sites may show that country
  • Top up the same eSIM any time, no new QR code

Will my eSIM have signal in Germany?

O2 and Vodafone are the two networks your German eSIM joins, and your phone picks between them by itself. Where 5G reaches, your phone uses it.

Cities and main routes are well covered, but some rural areas have patchy signal, so download maps before a countryside day out. Your data reaches the internet through France, the Netherlands or the United Kingdom, a normal setup for travel eSIMs; see how IP addresses work. Daily plans slow to a basic speed once you use up the day's allowance.

Install in two minutes

How to set up your Germany eSIM

  1. Install at home

On Wi-Fi, tap Install on iPhone (iOS 17.4+), scan the QR code, or type the two codes from your email.

  2. Switch on when you land

Turn on your eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and switch Data Roaming on for that line.

  3. You're online

Your phone joins O2 and your plan starts. Check data left on your eSIM page.

Using your phone in Germany: data tips

  • Landing: Land at Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC) or Berlin Brandenburg (BER) with your eSIM installed at home on Wi-Fi, then switch it on and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.
  • Getting around: Book a ride in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich or Frankfurt with Uber, Bolt or FREE NOW, and check the fare in the app before you confirm. Pin your pickup on the map and you're off.
  • Staying in touch: WhatsApp is your go-to for messages. Your home number stays on for calls and texts, and this WhatsApp guide shows how to keep both working.
  • On trains: Signal can be patchy on some train routes, so download your maps and tickets before you leave home, not on the platform.
  • Running low: Most plans can be topped up, so you can add more data mid-trip without starting a new eSIM.

How much is an eSIM for Germany?

Germany eSIMs start at £3.99 for 1 GB over 7 days. A 5 GB plan for 30 days costs £5.99. Prices include any taxes and show in pounds, euros or dollars.

Which networks does the Germany eSIM use?

Your eSIM connects to O2 and Vodafone in Germany, with 5G where the network has it. Your phone picks the strongest signal automatically.

When does my Germany eSIM start?

Most plans start the moment your eSIM first connects to a network in Germany, so you can buy and install it at home before you fly. Install it within 180 days of buying.

Can I top up my Germany eSIM?

Yes. Most Germany plans can be topped up from your eSIM page in two taps, with no new QR code. The plan table on this page shows which ones.

Why does my IP address show another country?

Germany plans route your data through France, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Websites and apps may show that country's content; your speed and coverage in Germany are not affected.

Does it come with a phone number?

Every eSIMology plan is data only. Keep your own SIM switched on for calls and texts, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or any calling app over your eSIM's data.

What if my plans change?

Cancel an eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund to your card, in two taps from your eSIM page.

Can I book an Uber from Berlin Brandenburg airport on an eSIM?

At Berlin Brandenburg (BER), Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC), Uber, Bolt and FREE NOW are ready to book a ride once your eSIM is on. The same three apps cover Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne and Frankfurt too.

Does Signal work on German trains with an eSIM?

Signal can be patchy on some German train routes, so download your maps and tickets before you set off. That way your journey plan is on your screen even when messages lag.

Can I use WhatsApp in Germany on an eSIM?

WhatsApp is the messaging app to use in Germany, so you can message home on the app you already have. Your eSIM data carries the messages, so there's no need to download anything new or change accounts.

Is there 5G in Germany on an eSIM?

On O2 and Vodafone, Germany has 5G, so a 5G phone can use it wherever it's available. Look for the 5G symbol on your status bar once you're connected, and you'll know you're on it.

Which eSIM covers Germany and other European countries?

Europe eSIM plans cover Germany along with other European countries, so one purchase can take you across several borders on one trip. Pick a Europe plan and check it covers every country on your route.

What happens when my daily data runs out in Germany?

Once your daily allowance is used up, your data slows to 512 Kbps. So choose a daily option that fits your busiest day, such as a day of maps, messages and streaming.
