What is an eSIM? Here's the plain answer
An eSIM is a tiny chip built into your phone that stores a travel data plan. You buy online, scan a QR code, and use it when you land. No plastic SIM needed.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is an embedded SIM: a tiny chip built into your phone. It does the job of a plastic SIM card, but you download the plan instead of putting a card in. Nothing to post, nothing to lose, and no tiny tray to open at the airport.
At eSIMology, a travel eSIM is a data plan for one trip. You buy online, it arrives by email, and you install it at home. Most plans start when it first connects to a supported network at your destination.
How is an eSIM different from a SIM card?
A plastic SIM is a card you swap in and out. An eSIM is built in, so there is no card to lose. Your phone can store several eSIMs and use two lines at once, so most travellers keep their home SIM on and add a travel eSIM for data.
- Data only: a travel eSIM gives you mobile data, not a phone number, calls or texts.
- Calls and messages: use WhatsApp, FaceTime and other apps over data.
- Home number: keep your home SIM in the phone so texts still arrive.
How do you install a travel eSIM?
Scan the QR code, tap the one-tap link on iPhone (iOS 17.4 and later), or type in the setup details by hand. Your eSIM page has all three options.
Does my phone take an eSIM?
Dial *#06#. If an EID number shows up, your phone takes eSIMs. Your phone must also be unlocked. To find the EID:
- iPhone: Settings → General → About
- Samsung: Settings → About phone (under Status information on some models)
- Pixel: Settings → About phone
Check the full list of supported phones, or read what an EID is.

Is a travel eSIM the same as roaming?
Not quite. The travel eSIM uses local partner networks, so your phone treats it as roaming. Turn Data Roaming on for the travel eSIM and off for your home line.
Can I cancel my eSIM and get a refund?
Yes, if you never installed it. An eSIM never installed can be cancelled within 30 days of buying for a full refund, money back to the card.
Can I make calls on a travel eSIM?
No. The travel eSIM is data only, so you call and message over data with WhatsApp, FaceTime and other apps.
