eSIM vs roaming: which costs less on your trip?
A travel eSIM is prepaid: one price up front, no bill afterwards, so it often costs less than home-network roaming, which bills you after the trip. Turn off Data Roaming on your home line.
Do this now
- Compare plans on your destination's page, such as Japan.
- Buy and install your travel eSIM before you fly, using its QR code.
- Turn Data Roaming on for the travel eSIM, and off for your home line.
- Turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching on iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data.
- Keep your home SIM in the phone so texts to your number still arrive.
- Check the usage meter on your eSIM page as you go.
Does an eSIM cost less than roaming?
Often, yes. A travel eSIM is prepaid: one price up front, no bill afterwards. Check your network's roaming price to compare, and see eSIM vs SIM vs pocket Wi-Fi.
What does roaming on my home network cost?
Your home network charges for data abroad, often by the day or with a pass. The cost shows on a bill after the trip.
- Home roaming: charged by the day or pass, and billed after you return.
- Travel eSIM: prepaid. You pick the data and the days, pay one price, and there is no bill afterwards.
You choose whether to top up when the data runs out. See how a travel eSIM works.
How do I stop surprise roaming charges?
Turn off Data Roaming on your home line, and turn it on for the travel eSIM. Most of the time it's one switch.
- iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → tap your home line → Data Roaming (off). Then Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data, and turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching.
- Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming (off for your home SIM).
- Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → tap your home SIM → Roaming (off).
The travel eSIM uses local partner networks, so your phone treats it as roaming, and Data Roaming must be ON for it. The full steps are in Avoid home roaming charges.
Can I keep my home number?
Yes. Your home SIM keeps your number for texts, while the travel eSIM carries the data. Call and message over data with WhatsApp, FaceTime and other apps.
How do I compare plans?
Open your destination's page, for example Japan, to see every plan's data, days and price. Most plans start when the eSIM first connects at your destination. A few start on install, and the plan page says which.
What should I do next?
Choose your plan, install before you fly, and set Data Roaming as above. Check the usage meter on your eSIM page as you go.
Will my home line still charge me if I use a travel eSIM?
Your home line can still charge you if Data Roaming is on there. Turn it off on your home line, and the travel eSIM carries your data instead.
Do I pay for a travel eSIM before I leave?
Yes. You pay one price up front when you buy, and there is no bill afterwards. You choose whether to top up when the data is used.
Can I top up my travel eSIM instead of buying a new one?
Yes, on plans that allow it. Top up from your eSIM page, and the data is added to the same eSIM, so there is nothing new to install.
