Using one eSIM across the UK & Ireland: tips

Two countries, one eSIM, and a border you might not notice. Near the border with Northern Ireland, your phone may switch to a UK network without warning, so don't be surprised.

  • Set up before you fly: Install your eSIM at home, then keep data roaming on for the eSIM line at every border. Turn on data roaming if you're not sure how.
  • Rides in both countries: Uber and FREENOW are the ride apps for both countries, and Bolt runs in the UK too.
  • Messages and Wi-Fi: WhatsApp is the messaging app to download for both countries. Many cafés, shops and stations also offer free Wi-Fi, often with a sign-up page, so you can save your mobile data for maps.
  • Keep your home number: Want to keep your home number for calls and texts? See how to keep WhatsApp and your home number.
  • Top up on the go: Every plan can be topped up, so if your trip runs longer you can add more data mid-trip.
