Which Tanzania eSIM plan do I need?

Start with how long you're staying and how much you'll really use it, then match the plan to your trip.

  • A three-day city break in Dar es Salaam: light use, so 1 GB for 7 days is plenty for maps, messages and a few rides.
  • A fortnight touring Serengeti, Arusha and Moshi: standard use for 14 days means 10 GB for 30 days, with room for social media, music and some video.
  • A week that takes in a neighbour: standard use for 7 days fits 5 GB for 30 days, and the Africa 21-country eSIM also covers Tanzania.
  • A month in Zanzibar with heavy use: 2 GB a day for 30 days gives room for streaming and hotspot.

Most plans can be topped up, so you can add more mid-trip if you need it.

Good to know

  • Data only: your own number keeps working for calls and texts
  • Hotspot works where your phone and the network allow it
  • Plans start when you first connect; install within 180 days
  • Your data routes through Singapore, so some sites may show that country
  • Top up the same eSIM any time, no new QR code

Will my eSIM have signal in Tanzania?

Airtel is the network your eSIM joins in Tanzania, and it offers 5G. Cities and towns are covered, but signal is patchy in national parks and remote areas, so download your maps before you leave town.

Your phone picks Airtel by itself, so there is nothing to set up. Your data reaches the internet through Singapore, a normal setup for travel eSIMs, and the IP address help page explains more. Daily plans slow to 512 Kbps once you have used the day's allowance, so save heavy video for when you're on Wi-Fi.

Using your phone in Tanzania: data tips

  • Land and switch on: Touch down at Julius Nyerere International (DAR), Kilimanjaro International (JRO) or Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ), then switch your eSIM line on. Install it at home on Wi-Fi first, so it is ready when you land.
  • Data roaming: Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line so your phone uses it on the Airtel network, which includes 5G. Here's how.
  • Getting around: Have Uber or Bolt ready for rides in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or Arusha. Download them at home, while you're on Wi-Fi.
  • Staying in touch: Message friends and family on WhatsApp, which uses your mobile data. Your home number stays on for calls and texts. Keep WhatsApp and your home number working.
  • Adding more data: Most plans can be topped up, so you can add more data mid-trip without buying a new eSIM.
