Which Sri Lanka eSIM plan do I need?

Pick the plan that matches how long you stay and how much you use your phone.

  • A city break in Colombo or Kandy: for 3 days of standard use, 2 GB for 15 days suits maps, messages and social media.
  • A fortnight touring Galle, Ella and Sigiriya: for 14 days of standard use, 10 GB for 30 days leaves room for maps, music and some video.
  • A month-long stay: for 30 days of standard use, 20 GB for 30 days keeps you covered for the whole month.
  • Sri Lanka plus a neighbour: the South Asia bundle covers six countries, Sri Lanka among them, so one eSIM can cover the rest of your route.

Most plans can be topped up, and the longest is 50 GB for 180 days.

Good to know

  • Data only: your own number keeps working for calls and texts
  • Hotspot works where your phone and the network allow it
  • Plans start when you first connect; install within 180 days
  • Your data routes through Netherlands, so some sites may show that country
  • Top up the same eSIM any time, no new QR code

Will my eSIM have signal in Sri Lanka?

Your eSIM joins Hutch on 4G in Sri Lanka, and your phone picks it up by itself, so there's no network to choose. Cities and main tourist areas are well covered, but signal can drop in the hill country and remote national parks. Save offline maps before you head up into the hills.

Your data reaches the internet through the Netherlands, a normal setup for travel eSIMs, and you can read more on our IP address help page. Daily plans slow to 512 Kbps once you have used the day's allowance.

Your phone in Sri Lanka: data, rides and messages

  • Arriving: Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. At Bandaranaike (CMB), switch it on and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line, and you're ready to use your data.
  • Getting around: Your mobile data runs maps in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Ella and Sigiriya, so you can find your way between them. For a lift, book a ride with PickMe or Uber from the same phone.
  • Staying in touch: Keep chatting on WhatsApp or Viber as you normally would. Your home number stays on for calls and texts, so people back home can still reach you the usual way. The WhatsApp guide shows how to keep both working.
  • Network: Your eSIM runs on Hutch's 4G network, the one you'll use for maps, messages and rides.

Sri Lanka eSIM questions

Money back to your card. Cancel any eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund. Our promise
How much is an eSIM for Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka eSIMs start at £3.99 for 100 MB over 7 days. A 5 GB plan for 30 days costs £10.99. Prices include any taxes and show in pounds, euros or dollars.

Which networks does the Sri Lanka eSIM use?

Your eSIM connects to Hutch in Sri Lanka. Your phone picks the strongest signal automatically.

When does my Sri Lanka eSIM start?

Most plans start the moment your eSIM first connects to a network in Sri Lanka, so you can buy and install it at home before you fly. Install it within 180 days of buying.

Can I top up my Sri Lanka eSIM?

Yes. Most Sri Lanka plans can be topped up from your eSIM page in two taps, with no new QR code. The plan table on this page shows which ones.

Why does my IP address show another country?

Sri Lanka plans route your data through Netherlands, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Websites and apps may show that country's content; your speed and coverage in Sri Lanka are not affected.

Does it come with a phone number?

Every eSIMology plan is data only. Keep your own SIM switched on for calls and texts, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or any calling app over your eSIM's data.

What if my plans change?

Cancel an eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund to your card, in two taps from your eSIM page.

Can I book a PickMe or Uber ride from Bandaranaike airport?

Yes. PickMe and Uber both run in Sri Lanka, so you can book a ride from Bandaranaike (CMB) using your eSIM data. Get the app set up before you fly, so you're not typing a password in the arrivals hall.

Is there 5G in Sri Lanka?

No. Sri Lanka runs on 4G, so your phone will show 4G on your eSIM, not 5G. That's the network you'll use for maps, messages and checking your bookings, so there's nothing to change in your settings.

Can I use WhatsApp in Sri Lanka on an eSIM?

Yes. Messages on WhatsApp and Viber go over your eSIM data, so you can send photos and updates home from Colombo, Kandy or Galle, whichever city you're in.

Which eSIM covers Sri Lanka and other countries in South Asia?

The South Asia bundle covers Sri Lanka and five other countries, so you can keep one eSIM if you travel on through the region. For a wider route, the Asia bundle covers 19 countries.

Can I share my Sri Lanka eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes, you can share your eSIM data as a hotspot. Heavy use, which includes hotspot, runs at around 1.8 GB a day, so it's worth keeping an eye on your data if you're sharing with a friend or two.
