Which Chile eSIM plan do I need?

Start with how many days you'll be in Chile and how much you'll use your phone, then pick the match below.

  • A city break in Santiago: A week of maps, messages and email is light use, so 2 GB for 15 days covers it.
  • A fortnight touring between Valparaíso and San Pedro de Atacama: For 14 days of social media, music and some video, go for 10 GB for 30 days.
  • A long stay of 30 days: Standard use over a month needs 20 GB for 30 days.
  • A trip that also takes in a neighbour: Add the South America 6-country bundle to cover the neighbouring country too.

If you run short, most plans can be topped up.

Good to know

  • Data only: your own number keeps working for calls and texts
  • Hotspot works where your phone and the network allow it
  • Plans start when you first connect; install within 180 days
  • Your data routes through Belgium, so some sites may show that country
  • Top up the same eSIM any time, no new QR code

Will my eSIM have signal in Chile?

Your eSIM joins CLARO CL or movistar in Chile, and your phone picks between them by itself, so there's nothing to choose. Cities and main roads are well covered, Santiago and Valparaíso included. Signal can be patchy in the Andes, the Atacama and remote Patagonia, so plan ahead for those trips.

Your data reaches the internet through Belgium, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Read more on our IP address help page.

If you pick a daily plan, it slows to 512 Kbps once that day's allowance is used up.

Install in two minutes

How to set up your Chile eSIM

  1. Install at home

On Wi-Fi, tap Install on iPhone (iOS 17.4+), scan the QR code, or type the two codes from your email.

  2. Switch on when you land

Turn on your eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and switch Data Roaming on for that line.

  3. You're online

Your phone joins CLARO CL and your plan starts. Check data left on your eSIM page.

Using your phone in Chile: arrival, rides and messages

  • Arriving: Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, before you pack, then switch it on when you land at Arturo Merino Benítez (SCL). Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line before you board.
  • Getting around: Book a ride with Uber, Cabify, DiDi or inDrive from your phone, and check your route on the way. Ride apps are handy after a long flight.
  • Staying in touch: WhatsApp is the messaging app to set up before you leave, so it is one less thing to sort at the airport. Your home number stays on for calls and texts, and this WhatsApp help page has the details.
  • Running low: Most plans can be topped up, so if you use more data than planned, you can add more while you travel, without buying a new eSIM.
  • Networks: Your eSIM runs on the CLARO CL and movistar networks in Chile.

How much is an eSIM for Chile?

Chile eSIMs start at £3.99 for 100 MB over 7 days. A 5 GB plan for 30 days costs £16.99. Prices include any taxes and show in pounds, euros or dollars.

Which networks does the Chile eSIM use?

Your eSIM connects to CLARO CL and movistar in Chile. Your phone picks the strongest signal automatically.

When does my Chile eSIM start?

Most plans start the moment your eSIM first connects to a network in Chile, so you can buy and install it at home before you fly. Install it within 180 days of buying.

Can I top up my Chile eSIM?

Yes. Most Chile plans can be topped up from your eSIM page in two taps, with no new QR code. The plan table on this page shows which ones.

Why does my IP address show another country?

Chile plans route your data through Belgium, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Websites and apps may show that country's content; your speed and coverage in Chile are not affected.

Does it come with a phone number?

Every eSIMology plan is data only. Keep your own SIM switched on for calls and texts, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or any calling app over your eSIM's data.

What if my plans change?

Cancel an eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund to your card, in two taps from your eSIM page.

Is there 5G in Chile?

No. Chile's networks, CLARO CL and movistar, run on 3G, so expect 3G rather than 5G on your phone. 3G is fine for maps and messages, even in Santiago.

Can I book an Uber from Arturo Merino Benítez airport in Chile?

Yes, once you're online. Uber, Cabify, DiDi and inDrive all need mobile data to book a ride, so keep your eSIM switched on as you land at Arturo Merino Benítez (SCL).

Can I use WhatsApp in Chile?

Yes. WhatsApp is the messaging app to have in Chile, and it runs on mobile data, so make sure data roaming is switched on for your eSIM.

How much data do I need for two weeks in Chile?

About 3.5 GB for two weeks of light use, covering maps, messages and email. Standard use, with social media, music and some video, is about 9.8 GB for the same time.

Which eSIM covers Chile and the rest of South America?

Yes, South America eSIMs cover Chile. You can choose one covering 6 countries or a larger one covering 20, or a Global eSIM covering 117 countries if your trip goes further afield.

How much data does a hotspot use in Chile?

Around 1.8 GB a day when you're streaming and using a hotspot for a laptop. Over a week, that's about 12.6 GB, so choose a larger plan if you'll share a lot.
