Using your phone in Benin: data tips
- Arriving: Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. When you land at Cadjehoun (COO), switch it on and keep data roaming on for the eSIM line. Turn on data roaming shows you where.
- Your network: Your eSIM runs on Celtiis, on 4G. There's no 5G here, so there's no setting to look for, and your phone simply shows 4G when it connects.
- Getting around: Plan your days in Cotonou, Porto-Novo, Ouidah, Abomey or Ganvié with maps open. Light use, like maps and messages, is about 0.25 GB a day. Standard use, with social media, music and some video, is about 0.7 GB a day.
- Staying in touch: WhatsApp is the messaging app to have ready. Your home number stays on for calls and texts, so people can still reach you the usual way. Keep WhatsApp and your home number walks you through the setup.
Benin eSIM questions
How much is an eSIM for Benin?
Benin eSIMs start at £7.99 for 500 MB a day over 1 day. A 5 GB plan for 30 days costs £40.99. Prices include any taxes and show in pounds, euros or dollars.
Which networks does the Benin eSIM use?
Your eSIM connects to Celtiis in Benin. Your phone picks the strongest signal automatically.
When does my Benin eSIM start?
Most plans start the moment your eSIM first connects to a network in Benin, so you can buy and install it at home before you fly. Install it within 180 days of buying.
Can I top up my Benin eSIM?
Yes. Most Benin plans can be topped up from your eSIM page in two taps, with no new QR code. The plan table on this page shows which ones.
Why does my IP address show another country?
Benin plans route your data through United Kingdom, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Websites and apps may show that country's content; your speed and coverage in Benin are not affected.
Does it come with a phone number?
Every eSIMology plan is data only. Keep your own SIM switched on for calls and texts, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or any calling app over your eSIM's data.
What if my plans change?
Cancel an eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund to your card, in two taps from your eSIM page.
Will my eSIM work at Cadjehoun Airport (COO) in Benin?
Switch it on as you land at Cadjehoun (COO), since your eSIM runs on the Celtiis network there. Turn on data roaming before you go, so your maps and messages can use the network.
Is there 5G in Benin?
No. Benin runs on 4G through Celtiis, and that's the connection your eSIM uses. For everyday maps, messages and browsing, 4G does the job well, so you won't miss 5G.
Can I use WhatsApp in Benin on an eSIM?
Yes. WhatsApp is the messaging app to know in Benin, and it runs on your eSIM's mobile data, so your messages and photos go through Celtiis.
Can I stream videos in Benin on my eSIM?
You can, but video uses the most data. Heavy use, with streaming and hotspot sharing, comes to about 1.8 GB a day, while light use with maps and messages is about 0.25 GB a day.
Does my eSIM slow down in Benin after my daily allowance?
Yes, on daily plans. Once you've used that day's allowance, data drops to 512 Kbps, which is slow but still good enough for messages. Save your big downloads for a day with room in the allowance.
