Which Canada eSIM plan do I need?

Most trips fit one of these, so start with the one closest to yours and check the GB figure against your own use.

  • A city break in Montreal: For three days of maps, messages and some video, pick 3 GB for 15 days.
  • A two-week tour of Calgary and Banff: Take 10 GB for 30 days, which suits standard use over 14 days.
  • A long stay of a month: Take 20 GB for 30 days, which suits standard use across the whole stay.
  • A trip that also takes in the United States: Get the USA & Canada bundle, which covers both countries, so you won't need a second eSIM at the border.

Most plans can be topped up, so you can add more data if your trip runs long.

Good to know

  • Data only: your own number keeps working for calls and texts
  • Hotspot works where your phone and the network allow it
  • Plans start when you first connect; install within 180 days
  • Your data routes through United States, so some sites may show that country
  • Top up the same eSIM any time, no new QR code

Will my eSIM have signal in Canada?

Your eSIM joins Bell, Rogers Wireless, SaskTel and Telus, and it can use 5G where it's on offer. Your phone picks a network by itself, so there's nothing to set up once you land. Cities and the main highways are well covered; signal is patchy in the far north and remote areas.

Your data reaches the internet through a United States IP address, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. You can read more on our IP address help page. Daily plans slow to 512 Kbps once you've used that day's allowance.

Data guide

How much data do you need in Canada?

Light: maps, messages, email (about 0.25 GB a day). Standard: plus social, music, some video (about 0.7 GB a day). Heavy: plus streaming, video calls, hotspot (about 1.8 GB a day).

Install in two minutes

How to set up your Canada eSIM

  1. Install at home

On Wi-Fi, tap Install on iPhone (iOS 17.4+), scan the QR code, or type the two codes from your email.

  2. Switch on when you land

Turn on your eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and switch Data Roaming on for that line.

  3. You're online

Your phone joins Bell and your plan starts. Check data left on your eSIM page.

Using your phone in Canada: arrival, rides and messages

  • Touch down and switch on: Install your eSIM at home while you're on Wi-Fi. Then land at Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Vancouver (YVR) or Montréal-Trudeau (YUL), switch it on and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line, so your phone is ready to go.
  • Getting around: Uber and Lyft are the ride apps to load before you head out in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Banff, or Quebec City. Open them on Wi-Fi first, so you aren't hunting for a ride on the kerb.
  • Staying in touch: WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger keep your messages flowing over mobile data, and your home number stays on for calls and texts. Read how to keep WhatsApp and your home number before you fly.
  • Plan for the Rockies: Mobile signal can drop out in the Rockies and on remote highways, so download offline maps before you set off on a road trip.
Questions

Canada eSIM questions

Money back to your card. Cancel any eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund. Our promise
How much is an eSIM for Canada?

Canada eSIMs start at £3.99 for 100 MB over 7 days. A 5 GB plan for 30 days costs £13.99. Prices include any taxes and show in pounds, euros or dollars.

Which networks does the Canada eSIM use?

Your eSIM connects to Bell, Rogers Wireless, SaskTel and Telus in Canada, with 5G where the network has it. Your phone picks the strongest signal automatically.

When does my Canada eSIM start?

Most plans start the moment your eSIM first connects to a network in Canada, so you can buy and install it at home before you fly. Install it within 180 days of buying.

Can I top up my Canada eSIM?

Yes. Most Canada plans can be topped up from your eSIM page in two taps, with no new QR code. The plan table on this page shows which ones.

Why does my IP address show another country?

Canada plans route your data through United States, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Websites and apps may show that country's content; your speed and coverage in Canada are not affected.

Does it come with a phone number?

Every eSIMology plan is data only. Keep your own SIM switched on for calls and texts, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or any calling app over your eSIM's data.

What if my plans change?

Cancel an eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund to your card, in two taps from your eSIM page.

Can one eSIM cover Canada and the United States?

Yes. The USA & Canada bundle covers both countries on one eSIM, so you won't need a second one when you cross the border. Pick it if your route runs from Toronto to Vancouver, or on into the United States.

Does my Canada eSIM work in Banff and the Rockies?

Not always. Mobile signal can drop out in the Rockies and on remote highways, which matters on a road trip from Calgary and Banff. Download offline maps before you set off, so you still have directions when the signal drops.

What happens if I use up my daily data in Canada?

Once you've used your daily allowance, your speed drops to 512 Kbps. That's fine for messages, but video will crawl, so save streaming for wifi. Your allowance starts again each day, so you won't be stuck for the whole trip.

Can I order an Uber from Vancouver airport with an eSIM?

Yes, as long as your eSIM's data is switched on. Uber and Lyft are the two ride apps to have ready, so download them before you fly and you can book from Vancouver (YVR), Toronto Pearson (YYZ) or Montréal-Trudeau (YUL) without a fuss.

Can I use WhatsApp in Canada on my eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger both run on your eSIM's mobile data, so texts, photos and group chats come through wherever you have signal. They're handy for chatting with the people you're meeting, and for the group chat back home.

Is there 5G in Canada?

Yes, Canada has 5G. Your phone switches to it wherever the network offers it, which is most likely in big cities such as Toronto and Vancouver, and it falls back to a slower connection elsewhere.
