## Which Japan eSIM plan do I need?

Start with how long you're going and how much you'll use your phone each day, then pick the trip that sounds like yours.

- **A three-day city break in Tokyo:** light use, with maps and messages, suits 1 GB for 7 days.
- **A fortnight touring Kyoto, Osaka and beyond:** standard use, with social media, music and some video, fits 10 GB for 30 days.
- **A week of meetings in Osaka:** heavy use, with streaming and sharing your connection, suits 21 GB for 7 days.
- **Japan and South Korea in one trip:** the [Japan & South Korea eSIM](/esim/japan-and-south-korea) covers both countries, so you won't need to swap eSIMs between them.

Staying longer? The longest plan lasts 180 days, and most plans can be topped up.

## Will my eSIM have signal in Japan?

Your eSIM joins one of four networks in Japan: KDDI/au, NTT docomo, Rakuten Mobile or SoftBank. Your phone chooses between them by itself, and you get 5G where your network offers it.

Cities and main rail routes are well covered, including Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Signal can drop in mountains and remote rural areas, so save offline maps before you head out there. Your data reaches the internet through Hong Kong, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Read more on our [IP address help page](/help/ip-address-another-country). On daily plans, your speed drops to a fair use level once you've used that day's allowance.

## Using your phone in Japan: data tips

**Landing:** Land at Narita, Haneda or Kansai, switch your eSIM on, and turn on data roaming for that line. Install it at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, so it's ready when you touch down. [Turn on data roaming](/help/turn-on-data-roaming)

**Getting around:** Load your maps before you leave the arrivals hall, then book a ride with GO, Uber or DiDi. Save your pickup point in the app so your driver finds you.

**Staying in touch:** Many people in Japan use LINE, so ask friends to get it too. Your home number stays on for calls and texts. Read [how to keep WhatsApp and your home number](/help/keep-whatsapp-and-home-number) before you go.

**Free Wi-Fi:** Free public Wi-Fi often asks you to register first, so set aside a minute to sign up.

**Data:** Light use, such as maps, messages and email, is about 1.8 GB a week, and most plans can be topped up.

## Questions

### How much is an eSIM for Japan?

Japan eSIMs start at £3.99 for 100 MB over 7 days. A 5 GB plan for 30 days costs £6.99, and unlimited data starts at £10.99 for 3 days. Prices include any taxes and show in pounds, euros or dollars.

### Which networks does the Japan eSIM use?

Your eSIM connects to KDDI/au, NTT docomo, Rakuten Mobile and SoftBank in Japan, with 5G where the network has it. Your phone picks the strongest signal automatically.

### When does my Japan eSIM start?

Most plans start the moment your eSIM first connects to a network in Japan, so you can buy and install it at home before you fly. Install it within 180 days of buying.

### Can I top up my Japan eSIM?

Yes. Most Japan plans can be topped up from your eSIM page in two taps, with no new QR code. The plan table on this page shows which ones.

### Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Japan?

Yes, from £10.99 for 3 days. Unlimited and daily plans run at full speed up to a daily allowance, then at 384 Kbps after 500MB/day until the next day.

### Why does my IP address show another country?

Japan plans route your data through Hong Kong, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Websites and apps may show that country's content; your speed and coverage in Japan are not affected.

### Does it come with a phone number?

Every eSIMology plan is data only. Keep your own SIM switched on for calls and texts, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or any calling app over your eSIM's data.

### What if my plans change?

Cancel an eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund to your card, in two taps from your eSIM page.

### How much data do I need for a week in Japan?

A week in Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka on light use, with maps and messages, needs about 1.8 GB. Add social media, music and some video and it's about 4.9 GB, while streaming or hotspot use takes you to about 12.6 GB.

### Can I book a ride with GO or Uber in Japan?

Yes. Land at Narita, Haneda or Kansai, switch on your eSIM and open GO, Uber or DiDi. Your data lets you request a ride to your hotel in Tokyo or Osaka.

### Is there 5G in Japan?

Yes. Japan's networks run 5G, and your eSIM can use it on KDDI/au, NTT docomo, Rakuten Mobile and SoftBank. Your phone needs 5G support to connect on it.

### Can I use LINE in Japan with an eSIM?

Yes. LINE is the messaging app to have ready in Japan, and your eSIM's mobile data is what carries your chats, photos and location shares. Keep mobile data on and your group chats keep flowing.

### Is free public Wi-Fi in Japan enough for maps?

Not really. Free public Wi-Fi in Japan often asks you to register first, which is a pain when you need directions on a Tokyo platform. Your eSIM's data puts maps in your pocket with no sign-up.

### Which eSIM covers Japan and South Korea?

Japan & South Korea covers both countries on one eSIM, and China, Japan & South Korea adds China too. Asia covers 12 countries, Japan included. Pick the one that matches your route.
