## Which Ireland eSIM plan do I need?

Dublin weekends, Killarney road trips and month-long stays all need different amounts of data, so start with how long you're going.

- **A city break in Dublin:** three days of maps, messages and a few rides suit 1 GB a day for 3 days.
- **A fortnight touring Ireland:** from Cork to Galway, Killarney and Dingle, pick 10 GB for 30 days for standard use.
- **A month-long stay:** 20 GB for 30 days suits standard use for the whole visit.
- **A week that crosses the border:** near Northern Ireland, your phone may switch to a UK network without warning. For a week of standard use, the [UK & Ireland eSIM](/esim/uk-and-ireland) with 5 GB for 30 days fits.

Most plans can be topped up, so you can add more data mid-trip if you need it.

## Will my eSIM have signal in Ireland?

Your eSIM joins Eir, and Eir runs 5G, so your phone uses it wherever 5G is on offer. Cities, towns and main roads are well covered, while signal can be patchy in remote western and mountain areas. Your phone picks the network by itself, so there is nothing to set up once you land.

- Near the border with Northern Ireland, your phone may switch to a UK network without warning.
- Your data reaches the internet through France, the Netherlands or the United Kingdom, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Read more on [IP addresses in other countries](/help/ip-address-another-country).
- Daily plans slow down to 512 Kbps once you've used that day's allowance.

## Using your phone in Ireland: data tips

**Arriving:** Land at Dublin (DUB), Shannon (SNN) or Cork (ORK) with your eSIM already installed on home Wi-Fi. Then switch it on and [turn on data roaming for that line](/help/turn-on-data-roaming).

**Getting around:** Set up Uber or FREENOW before you leave home, so booking a ride in Dublin, Cork or Galway takes only a few taps.

**Staying in touch:** Message people on WhatsApp over your eSIM data. Your home number stays on for calls and texts, and [here's how to keep WhatsApp and your home number working](/help/keep-whatsapp-and-home-number).

**Near the border:** If you're close to Northern Ireland, your phone may switch to a UK network without warning. Don't worry if you see a different network name on your screen.

**Your network:** Your eSIM connects to Eir, which supports 5G. Running low on data? Most plans can be topped up mid-trip, so you can keep going.

## Questions

### How much is an eSIM for Ireland?

Ireland eSIMs start at £3.99 for 500 MB over 3 days. A 5 GB plan for 30 days costs £5.99. Prices include any taxes and show in pounds, euros or dollars.

### Which networks does the Ireland eSIM use?

Your eSIM connects to Eir in Ireland, with 5G where the network has it. Your phone picks the strongest signal automatically.

### When does my Ireland eSIM start?

Most plans start the moment your eSIM first connects to a network in Ireland, so you can buy and install it at home before you fly. Install it within 180 days of buying.

### Can I top up my Ireland eSIM?

Yes. Most Ireland plans can be topped up from your eSIM page in two taps, with no new QR code. The plan table on this page shows which ones.

### Why does my IP address show another country?

Ireland plans route your data through France, a normal setup for travel eSIMs. Websites and apps may show that country's content; your speed and coverage in Ireland are not affected.

### Does it come with a phone number?

Every eSIMology plan is data only. Keep your own SIM switched on for calls and texts, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or any calling app over your eSIM's data.

### What if my plans change?

Cancel an eSIM you haven't installed within 30 days for a full refund to your card, in two taps from your eSIM page.

### Can I use WhatsApp in Ireland with an eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp runs on your eSIM's mobile data, so you can send messages and photos from Dublin, Cork, Galway, Killarney or Dingle, and keep in touch with the people back home on the go.

### Can I book Uber or FREENOW in Ireland with an eSIM?

Yes. Uber and FREENOW both run on your mobile data, so you can book a ride in Dublin, Cork or Galway, and at Dublin (DUB), Shannon (SNN) and Cork (ORK) airports.

### Is there 5G in Ireland?

Yes. Eir's network includes 5G, so your phone will switch to 5G where Eir's 5G signal reaches. Look for the 5G symbol at the top of your screen to see it.

### Will my phone switch networks near the Northern Ireland border?

It can. Near the border with Northern Ireland, your phone may switch to a UK network without warning, so you may see a different network name at the top of your screen. Glance at it when you cross.

### Which eSIM covers Ireland and the UK?

The UK & Ireland eSIM covers both countries on one plan, so you won't need to swap eSIMs when you go between them. Choose it from the plans on this page if you're doing both.

### Do I need maps for the drive from Killarney to Dingle?

Yes, maps, sat nav and messages all run on mobile data, so a drive from Killarney to Dingle is easier when your phone shows you the way. Download your route before you set off, just in case.
